Question: Can mumps cause infertility?......................?

(Posted by: Carol on 2010-02-16 16:19:33)

We have been trying for a baby without luck for 8 months now. Recently I learned that he had mumps around age 12- 13. He says it was pretty painful and affected his left testes causing a size difference. Can this cause infertility? Can we get a basic semen analysis through his primary care physician or is it mandatory to get into an infertility clinic to do it? Please give us some insight on this..

Mumps orchitis (when if affects the testes) can cause infertility. He should see a urologist. Technically infertility is considered if you have been trying to conceive for more than 1 year so keep trying! If you are concerned he should see a urologist and you should see your OB. Best of luck!

It may affect sperm count but that could be checked - it could cause herpes later in life too

Yes, it is true. Your husband should get a semen analysis to be sure.
